Narratives in Architecture

Jonny often finds inspiration in fiction. "Stories are a way to connect to other concepts in everyday life and further help understand the reoccurring themes that make us human."

Jonny Rohrbaugh is currently a designer at Perkins+Will in the Branded Environments practice, located in Chicago, IL. His interest in the ‘branding’ phenomenon’ is concerned with the feelings a space or an object can invoke. Through seeking an emotional coherence, his aim is to induce emotions and connections to an identity greater than oneself. Outside of work, Jonny draws through improvisation, driven by passion and discipline. Additionally, he enjoys exploring his ideas through writing fiction (and non-fiction), as a way of further developing connections. He hopes to continue to generate enthusiasm and participation for pattern seeking, both professionally and independently, while always seeking new ways to inject spontaneity and unpredictability into the world.

''Design is a way to add value to space and contribute to the spiritual condition of the world by the sign of structure and order.''

''Design is a way to add value to space and contribute to the spiritual condition of the world by the sign of structure and order.''

Jonny challenges the fact that architects should produce a definite object, but rather create something open and incomplete as a way to inject spontaneity and unpredictability into the world.

''Architecture’s ultimate purpose is not to make life easier, but rather connect people to the built environment and encourage others to creatively think how to transform space and their own lives.''
